Why the Australians have heard about this before we have we’re not sure but we got this tip off from www.cyclingnews.com.
“Plans were outlined yesterday for a possible relaunch of the Milk Race, the international cycle race held in Britain which for 36 years was sponsored by the dairy industry and organised by the Milk Marketing Board.”
The plans for the 14 day race were outlined at the Royal Agricultural Show. It already has the support of the Sports Council, M.P’s and the dairy industry, with start up funding already offered.
The race was based around national teams and always had a cracking reputation but disappeared after de-regulation of the Milk Marketing board in 1993.
Mark Gornall, a Lancashire dairy farmer who competed in three Milk Races, told cycling news: “This is just what we want to publicise the farmers’ cause, and it’s good, too, for British cycling which badly needs a prestigious race.”
It certainly makes a change from farmers doing everything to keep the countryside solely to themselves. Further news on whether the plans go gold top or just curdle as soon as we hear more.
