You may not be familiar with the Hebridean Challenge. It’s one of those adventure race thingies, which means five days of hill running, road and mountain biking, sea swims and kayaking. On the Outer Hebrides. The course runs from Stornoway to Barra, and unlike some adventure races there’re no powered transfers – competitors will have got there entirely under their own steam.
The race starts on 23 June and finishes on the 28th. If you want to get a team together, you’ll need to be very competent in hill navigation (including in darkness or zero visibility) and should have prior experience in similar events. And you’ll need a sea kayaker with a BCU 4 Star Sea Certificate.
Entry fee is £300 per team, which looks on the face of it like a lot but that’s only £60 per person for a five day event and includes a roof over your head each night, so actually not at all unreasonable.
If you find yourself at the NEC Outdoors Show this weekend, look out for the One.Tel Hebridean Challenge team in the Renault Kangoo indoor adventure race – the team is captained by race director Gary Tompsett.
