It’s only a matter of weeks now until Fort William’s three-way XC/DH/4X World Cup round kicks off, and there’s still an important detail not quite settled. A brand new XC course is nearing completion in Leanachan Forest, which will become the Witches’ (or possibly Witch’s – we’re not sure how many there are) Trail after the race. The Forestry Commission are running the development of the trail and they’ve got a bit stuck on something – what to call the first bit… The Forestry Commission’s Keith Muir says, “We’ve already named some of the sections, like the Blue Crane, the Hole in What they don’t have a name for is the start section. It runs up from Aonach Mor car park, very close to the bottom of the 4X and DH courses. “It climbs from the car park and then doubles back on itself and descends back to the forest road using berms and switchbacks. We reckon this section will be fast!” says Keith. And as if having your chosen name applied to one of the best spectator spots on the course isn’t enough, there’s the added incentive of a pair of VIP event passes entitling you to access to the main tent, unlimited gondola rides and access to the best viewing spots. That’s got to be worth a punt, so send your suggestions to [email protected]. Closing date is 12 May… Don’t forget that you’ll have the opportunity to race on the new course on the World Cup weekend itself in the World Cup Chaser citizen’s XC race – get your entries in quick! |
