You’ve got a couple of choices this weekend if you’re after some trail building action. First up, the Redlands project in Surrey will be working on a twisting switchback climb. It’s a big job, so extra hands are more than welcome. They’ll be there from 10am until 4pm. The climb runs from Wolvens Lane, Coldharbour – to find the builders start at the bottom and work up…
There’ll be a ride including the already-built sections of the Summer Lightning trail that’ll rendezvous with the builders at the end if you’d like to mix a bit of pedalling with your digging. There’s a small selection of tools available but if you own anything useful, bring it along. Check www.justridingalong.com for details, or call Rebecca Milbourn on 01306 887923.
Some distance to the west in South Wales, felling contractors have now finished their work around the Hidden Valley section of the Penhyddh trail at Afan Argoed Forest Park. It’s apparently in a bit of a mess, being covered in brash and other assorted felling debris, but underneath it all it looks like most of the trail is intact.
The guys on the ground reckon that the trail can be re-opened by Easter but they’ll need some help. Mountain Bike Ranger Nick Murfin will be working on clearing the trail this weekend, including Friday, so if you’ve been waiting for Hidden Valley to re-open, now’s your chance to hasten its revival. Give Nick a call via the Visitor Centre on 01639 850564 if you’d like to lend a hand.
