We’ve only just had one bank holiday, and there’s already another one hoving into view. Which means you’ll be after something fun and bike-related to do over the weekend of 24-26 May, right? Right. Well, you could do a great deal worse than Trail Break’s Wight Diamond Festival.
It may have escaped your attention, but there’s some very good riding on the Isle of Wight. Geologically speaking, it’s a chunk of the South Downs gone a bit adrift. And apparently it has the highest density of trails in Europe…
So what’s it all about? The old saw “something for everyone” very much applies here. Keen types can participate in the Wight Diamond Challenge, a two day navigation event across the whole island (but you return to base overnight, so no Polaris-style featherlight camping required). Seven hours on Saturday, five on Sunday.
Sounds a bit keen? That’s OK, there’s always the Trail Ale Trail instead. Similar concept, except some of the checkpoints are in handy pubs and cafes. And since you don’t have to visit all of them, you can skip the ones that are up in the hills. It’s two days too.
Monday brings a choice of stuff, with the King of the Hills the hardest option – a route across five sizable Wight hills. Actually, the hardest option is probably the Hedstart Challenge. Same route, but you have to drink five pints of beer the previous evening and down a pint of SiS’s Hedstart hangover palliative on the start line. Or there’s Chill in the Hills, a similar format but slightly more mellow.
That’s the actual riding bit. Then there’s all the other stuff. Evenings at base camp will bring live music, plenty of food, an ample supply of beer and all manner of tangentially bike-related sideshows, probably involving minibikes, footballs, exploding inner tubes and anything else that anyone comes up with…
And as if all that isn’t enough to tempt you, there’s Actual Cash Prizes (and other prizes) to be won in the riding events. There’s a £4,000 prize fund with £1,200 in cash. There’s the possibility of winning up to £300 if you win one of the bigger categories. And there’s product prizes all over the shop – particularly noteworthy are the womens’ categories, with single and team winners receiving £500-worth of bike clothing from Corinne Dennis. And guess what the SiS Hedstart challenge winner wins? That’s right – more beer! By the barrel, from the Hogs Back brewery. Mmmmm, beer…
Altogether, prizes and support are coming from SiS, Kona, USE, Evans Cycles, Corinne Dennis, Ninham Camping, Basta, The Hogs Back Brewery and Trail Ale. All the details you need are on Trail Break’s website. Base camp is Ninham Camping – a handy tip from Trail Break is to book accommodation (at Ninham or anywhere else) before sorting out a ferry crossing, as the campsites can arrange cheaper deals.
And of course the weather will be spectacular. So what are you waiting for?
