Stage races are all the rage at the moment. The British Heart Foundation is putting on a six stage race around Afan Forest, South Wales on 1 October, although there are a couple of key differences between this race and the likes of the TransRockies. The most obvious difference is that all the stages happen on the same day. And the other thing is that they don’t all involve riding bicycles.
Teams of five or six can take part in the event, which kicks of with a 5km run through Margam Park. There’s then a 18.3km ride to the Afan Argoed visitor centre, where competitors will embark in a team agility test – what that entails we’re not actually sure… Then it’s back on with the trainers for an 8km run around the local hills, before a 18.9km ride to Gnoll Country Park with nearly 700m of climbing. A final challenge consisting of inflating a dinghy and navigating across a lake will complete the challenge. Oh, and you’ve got just eight hours in which to do all this.
Organiser Mali James says: “The Afan Challenge is in its 2nd year and following a fantastic response from the teams last year this year’s event should be as good or event better.”
Want to take part? Be quick as there are only a limited number of team places available and so it’s on a first to register basis. Registration forms are available by contacting the Wales Events Office on 0800 783 6970 or by email [email protected].
The entry fee is £50 per person. Teams of between 4-6 members must raise a minimum sponsorship of £1,000 per team and teams of 2 must raise a minimum of £500. Entry fee is deducted from sponsorship total. Entry fees go towards the cost of administering and organising this complex event. It’s only through sponsorship efforts that the BHF benefits.
