With the prices of top-end helmets soaring, it’s good to see the release of BBB’s mid-range Varallo helmet, which manages to look way more expensive than its price would otherwise suggest.
BBB produce a vast range of accessories and the Varallo is the latest in its helmet range. It came about after several trail mountain bikers working at BBB decided to design a helmet for themselves, and this vested interest shows.
A trail riding helmet, it follows similar style lines to the venerable Giro Xen, with the rear of the helmet dropping noticeably lower to increase protection around the back of the head.
18 vents interrupt the in-mould shell with dedicated exit vents to maximise airflow over your scalp. The forward-facing vents are backed with a mesh to stop bugs and the occasional wasp from finding their way in.
It’s well designed with a smart internal SpiderWeb structure and aluminium and carbon fibre reinforcements for crash protection. Their own retention system, TwistClose, allows a snug and comfortable fit that is easy to adjust. Anti-bacterial pads sit between your head and the helmet, and can easily be removed for washing.
We say:
All in, a really good looking helmet packed with interesting features at a great price.
Available in December in two sizes and three colours, the Varallo will set you back £54.95. More info at www.bbbcycling.com and www.windwave.co.uk
