Helmet (Standard)

Bell Super helmet

The new Bell Super helmet is targeted at the growing enduro market with extra protection and smart looks

Price: £99

What they say: All-mountain riding has progressed, and so have the bikes. But in some cases, the equipment hasn’t kept up. That’s why we created the Super. Just like  Today’s lightweight, longer travel trail bikes—which can slay descents but also climb—Super is purpose-built for all-mountain fun.

What it is: Enduro is the latest buzzword in mountain biking and it’s spawning a lot of new, so-called ‘enduro-specific’ products. Bell’s Super helmet is one example. It’s a good looking helmet available in a range of colours, and provides extra protection with more lower head coverage at the sides and back. It cossets you far more than a cross-country helmet.

One big bugbear of the lower side protection is the lack of compatibility with certain brands of eyewear – there just isn’t enough space to squeeze the arms of your shades into.

The huge peak is adjustable and the helmet can accommodate goggles (you can even remove the visor and fit goggle tabs) and the large number of vents work well to prevent overheating when plugging away on long climbs. It’s a warmer helmet than most other helmets though.

It’s almost mandatory to film rides every ride days to produce a “sick edit” and the Super has a removeable GoPro mount on the top. The mount fixes to the of vents with a piece of Velcro and is very sturdy, we got decent shake-free footage in testing, but the weight of the camera does push the helmet forward slightly.

The Bell Super is a comfortable helmet. It’s lined with generous foam padding, and the retention system is easy to dial in and is adjustable for different head sizes and shapes. The high weight (395g) of the helmet does mean it’s susceptible to moving around unless you ratchet up the retention device very tightly.

Who it’s good for: Anyone wanting a bit of extra safety, a helmet that won’t look out of place on an enduro and one that is ideal for GoPro filmmakers and goggle wearers. But it’s let down by its weight and poor ventilation
