Gijs Dohmen leads the Trans-Portugal stage race by more than 30 minutes after four of nine stages.
The 1,150km race crosses Portugal from north to south before finishing in Sagres on Sunday.
Marco Almeida led after the first two stages but suffered badly on day three, enduring two punctures and suffering from lingering flu, resulting in difficulty breathing properly and an upset stomach that saw him finish 55 minutes down on stage winner Dohmen.
And Dohmen consolidated his lead on day four to lie 37 minutes, 37 seconds ahead of Ignacio Romero, with Sergio Marques a further two minutes, 44 seconds back and Almeida in fourth, one minute, nine seconds off a podium spot.
