He was clobbered while out training with US Postal team mates Tyler Hamilton and Frankie Andreu on Tuesday while training in the hills above his Nice home.
“There is nothing broken or serious, but I’m very banged up,” Armstrong told his personal website.
Armstrong, winner of the Tour de France for the last two years, said his bike was extensively damaged in the collision and he would be “off the bike for two days or so”.
Hamilton said the three riders had been confronted by “a speeding car out of nowhere”. “The car drove straight into Lance but luckily his bike took most of the impact,” said Hamilton. “Lance went flying off his bike and tumbled down the road but suffered only bruises and minor road rash, thankfully.”
Hamilton said he has also crashed off the road and “re-opened a few wounds” while Andreu was unhurt.”
Rumours of the hit and run car being driven by a ginger German are as yet unconfirmed but if it’s a body double riding the Vuelta D’Espania that would explain Ullrich’s surprisingly poor form in the prologue.
