Jan Ullrich took Olympic laurels in the road race ealier today, with his Deutsche Telekom teammates, Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan second and Andreas Kloden of Germany third.

Team GB couldn’t translate its success on the track on to the road, however, as Atlanta bronze medallist Max Sciandri and the other British riders never really got to grips with the leaders once they broke away. Rob Hayles, who narrowly missed out on the medals on the track, repeated his penchant for accidents, illustrated so dramatically in the Madison, as he crashed out in the second half of the race.
