The World Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) speed record has been shattered by Canadian Sam Whittingham who pedalled his recumbent to an astonishing 80.55 mph over 200 metres.
Meanwhile Jason Queally broke the British HPV speed record, clocking 64.34 mph during the same competition in Nevada, USA.

Queally, Olympic gold medallist in the kilometre time trial, opted not to race at the recent 2001 track championships preferring to concentrate his efforts on last week’s HPV event. Despite having the Blueyonder team and a high-tech bike behind him, he was unable to outperform the Canadian, and is no doubt disappointed.

Chris Field, designer of Queally’s Challenger bike, told Ananova; “Obviously I’m
disappointed, but I will also take home a pride in our achievements and the
progress we made over the last week – taking a raw product straight out of
the box and cracking over 60 mph in four days.”

Disappointment aside, we think it’s important to focus on the achievement of breaking the British Record and wish the team every success in future efforts.
