London’s famous Herne Hill Velodrome, originally built over a hundred years ago and used in the 1948 Olympics, is to be regenerated and turned into a multi-purpose cycle sport and fitness facility. The plans, which have already been given approval by Southwark Council, include an all-weather perimeter cover, gym facilities and an indoor climbing centre.
It’s all thanks to the London Velodrome Trust, formed from the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome. The plans have the support of London Assembly member for Lambeth and Southwark Val Shawcross and Mayor Ken Livingstone. All the Trust needs to do now is raise six million quid to pay for it all…
The Trust has ambitious plans, hoping that the redeveloped facility will play a part in future London Olympic bids and maybe even a London start for the Tour de France. More information at www.londonvelodrome.com.
