Canadian company Vanhawks smart commuter bike the Vanhawks Valour is now available for sale. You may have heard of this bike previously, it garnered a bit of attention last year when its Kickstarter raised $700,000 over it’s $100,000 goal.
The Vanhawks designers set out to create a modern commuter bike, marrying together technology and build quality to produce a bike ideal for the modern urban rider.
The bike collates data on its rider by tracking routes, distances and speeds, this data is then fed back to the riders smartphone. In other words the bike is able to ‘learn’ the riding habits of its rider. It is able to do this thanks to the in-built gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, speed sensor, and GPS receiver which are housed within the bikes carbon fibre frame.
Vanhawks riders benefit from a shared user network where information from all riders is uploaded. This can include information on hazards such as pot-holes, whether roads are fit for cyclists and also any road closures or similar that could disrupt the riders planned route. Using bluetooth the rider can connect their smartphone for directions, with LEDs on the handlebars directing the rider.
Similarly the handlebars vibrate to signify objects in the rider’s blind spot. As well as all this the bike is also able to collate ride information, such as calories burned, distance travels, speed and best times.
Comfort was a key consideration in the design process, the bike boasts a “unique ergonomic design” which is said to relieve pressure on the rider’s back, spine and buttocks.
Theft is unfortunately a common concern for cyclists in the city, with this in mind the Valour network interacts with information provided automatically by other users in order to locate the missing bike.
The bike retails for USD $1,399 for singlespeed, and $1,649 for multi-geared. More information can be found on the Vanhawks website.
