The Bike Show (Birmingham NEC, 16-18 April) is making a big effort to broaden its appeal for 2004, with the team at Haymarket Exhibitions adding in two hefty new features. First up is one for the road fans – the Tour de France Experience will feature a history of the race, an exhibition of winning bikes, historic footage and an interactive area “to give people a taste of what it takes to win”. And before you ask, no, it’s not a pharmacy, you cynical bunch…
The TdF Experience complements the now well-established Bike Show Circuit Cup race in the grounds of the NEC, a great opportunity to see some fast and furious road race action up close.
We know that some visitors to the show in the past have found the public bike test area a little underwhelming, but this year it should be rather splendid – Forestry Commission Scotland’s trail building team have been brought in to construct a new Outdoor Technical Trail in a 1,500sq m area (which if our sums are right is about a quarter of a full-size football pitch or seven tennis courts, but there’ll be no nets on it). The FC Scotland team are responsible for the Fort William World Cup XC course and the 7Stanes train project, so they know what they’re about.
The usual features will make a welcome return, and the show will be held in three new halls at the NEC for, it says here, “better zoning”. BMX Street, Vert and Flatland displays will be in one hall, the dirt race course featuring MTB 4X, BMX and dirt dumping will be in another and everything else will, we assume, be in the third…
