Here’s a charity ride of the old school – no exotic foreign destinations or groups of a hundred riders, just two blokes, two bikes, a self-financed trip across a big chunk of the UK and a polite request to send money to a charity.
The riders in question are Andy Armstrong and Mark Lister, the chunk of the UK is the bit between Edinburgh and Todmorden on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border and the charity is Epilepsy Scotland. The charity works for people with epilepsy in Scotland, improving healthcare, providing information, and fighting the stigma attached to this condition. Mark has suffered from epilepsy since he was three. He says, “As a passionate mountain biker who has had epilepsy most of my life, this project is very close to my heart. It is also a wonderful way of bringing people together, and making a difference to the lives of others by doing something we all love.”
The ride, christened The Big Thrash, starts in Edinburgh on 28 May and passed through the Pentland Hills to Peebles, through Glentress and Innerleithen to Hawick, through Kielder Forest, across the Pennines and Yorkshire Dales to reach Todmorden on 3 June. Riders who’d like to join in for all or part of the route are welcome – contact the organisers. They’re also looking for volunteers to carry a couple of bags between each day’s start and end points.
And of course those all-important sponsorship details: Donations can be made online at www.justgiving.com/TheBigThrash – the organisers would love people to spread that link around as much as possible…
