2001 Giro d’ Italia winner, Gilberto Simoni, has been cleared of doping by the Italian Cycling Federation and public prosecutors office in Trento. The Italian had failed two tests for cocaine during May’s Giro and had been suspended by his Saeco team prior to the Tour de France.
The results mark the end of a frustrating set of medical analyses in which even the rider’s hair had been tested for drug abuse. The cocaine has finally been attributed to homeopathic lozenges Simoni was given by his aunt to combat a sore throat.
The Italian will begin racing with immediate effect and will hope to challenge in the Vuelta next month
