Phil Saxena to design Glasgow Commonwealth course

Phil Saxena, who designed the Beijing Olympic Games mountain bike course, has been chosen to create the circuit for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, which are to be hosted in Scotland, the Evening Times reports.

The track, which will cost £650,000, will be build at Cathkin Braes, Glasgow. Work is expected to start in spring next year with testing and further development continuing from early 2013.

“We are extremely pleased to be working on such an exciting mountain bike course within easy reach of 1.6million potential mountain bike users,” Phil commented.

“The opportunity for developing the sport of mountain biking at Cathkin Braes is excellent with a mix of woodland, moorland and grasslands to give the riders a real challenge.

“We are looking forward to delivering the project alongside Glasgow City Council officers to ensure a safe, fun trail is created for the city of Glasgow both during the Games and for many years to come.”

You may not be familiar with Phil Saxena. He’s been designing courses for the past ten years, and is responsible for many of the UCI World Cup courses. Currently he’s working on a project to implement 11km of surfaced singletrack in Ashton Court, Bristol and Leigh Woods.
