MTBer named Canadian male athlete of the year

Canadian mountain-biker Roland Green has beaten off stiff competition from across the sporting field to win the title of Canadian male athlete of the year.

Green had a cracking 2001 season, he’s won the World Cup, the world mountain biking championships, and both the NORBA short- and long-track cross-country championships. In the 2001 season Green became the first man ever to win every major event on the pro mountain bike tour. It was for this particular achievement that he was granted the award by Canada’s Spirit of Sport Foundation.

For Green it was great not only that his achievements in 2001 were acknowledged, but also that mountain biking as a sport got some recognition with the award this year.

But Green’s ambitions aren’t restricted to success
offroad according to Outside mag. Like quite a few other top mountainbike racers these days,
he’s also been appearing in road races and not doing too badly at all by all accounts. His results include a fourteenth place at the Road World Championships.
But those worried roadies can take some small comfort from the fact that Green still has a year to run on his current sposorship contract with
Trek/Volkswagen.
