More trail building action from the Euro-funded 7Stanes project in Scotland – a five-strong team of builders are hard at work in Kirroughtree, near Newton Stewart, carving out a pair of purpose-built routes for experienced and less experienced riders.
The team are applying knowledge and experience gained at the well-regarded Mabie and Dalbeattie developments to the new trails. As has become traditional for the 7Stanes trails, Kirroughtree will feature plenty of rock features including a 40degree slab to climb up, for a new challenge.
The plan is for a number of loops that can be combined into an easy “family” route of around 10km or a harder route with steep climbs, singletrack and rock features totalling around 28km – you’ll be able to mix and match the sections to your taste. The 7Stanes project is being carried out by a cast of thousands – Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway, the European Regional Development Fund through the South of Scotland European Partnership, Dumfries and Galloway and Scottish Borders Councils and Tourist Boards, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scottish Natural Heritage, Solway Heritage, Barony College and local cycling volunteers.
The Kirroughtree trails won’t be ready to ride until Spring 2004, so don’t go cutting them up before they’re set – we’ll let you know when they’re done. In the meantime, keep an eye on www.7stanes.gov.uk for more information.
