Just got some news in regarding Marcel Wurst’s eye injury,
from Specialized USA
Yesterday Marcel was transferred from the hospital in Clermont
Ferrand, France to a hospital in Cologne, Germany by aeroplane.
Tomorrow (Friday) he will undergo another operation where they will attempt to save
as much of the sight in his injured right eye as possible. While I do not know the
exact prognosis I think it is accurate to say that there is serious damage and at
this point the goal is to repair the eye as best possible and save as much of the
sight as possible.
Mention of "losing the eye" seems somewhat inaccurate (and a little gory)
and I think "losing some sight" is a more accurate and realistic description.
I spoke to Festina’s team secretary, Rosa Rodriguez, this morning and she informed
me that Marcel is in good spirits and apparently said that although he may have missed
the Vuelta Espana there is always the Tour of Poland!. Typical Marcel.
Until his eye heals (and also a head injury that required some stitches) it is not
known when Marcel will return to training and racing but we all hope it will be soon.
Meanwhile as soon as I know anything more I will let you all know.
Regards
Kirsten
