Liam Killeen and Nikki Harris both recorded convincing wins in round three of the British Mountain Bike Series at the Wasing Estate.
Killeen, who is continuing to fine-tune his London 2012 preparations after fifth and seventh place finishes at the Athens and Beijing Olympics respectively, attacked on the second lap to escape a 10-rider group which included series leader Oli Beckingsale.
The British champion quickly established a twenty second lead going into lap three, but, with four laps to complete and the chasing group still hot on his tail.
Paul Oldham attacked in a bid to bridge the gap to Killeen but faltered on the final lap, finishing second, while Ola Kjoren completed the podium and Beckingsale settled for fourth.
Meanwhile, international cyclo-cross racer Harris marked her one-off return to mountain biking with a supreme performance over the fast deteriorating 6km circuit.
Harris, 15th at the 2011 cyclo-cross worlds, dominated from the off, with Maddie Horton spending the race in solo pursuit, going on to finish second, and Mel Spath winning the battle for third from the chasing group.
“That reminded me why I love this sport so much,” said race organiser Martyn Salt.
“In awful and changeable conditions, some of the best XC riders in the country came out here and put on a show. The mud and the sweat didn’t stop them from entertaining us or from doing what they love by racing their bikes.”
