Who’d have thought that you could hold an MTB enduro in mid-Wales and get good weather? Well, it happened last weekend for the first of the Kona 100 MTB-Marathon series in Rhayader, and 800 people were there to enjoy it.
That’s quite a lot of people, really, and we’re told they made an impressive site as they climbed out of Rhayader behind the Kona lead car. Amazingly, the weather held right the way through the day, allowing finishing riders to cross the line, collapse on to the grass and just stay there and chill out…
Meanwhile, tons of prizes were awarded in free prize draws from sponsors Kona, Parrot, SRAM, Schwalbe, USE, What Mountain Bike and High5.
If the first one whetted your appetite or if you feel you missed out, clear 5-6 July in your diary and head for Builth Wells. The organisers promise a considerably revised course, including new moorland singletrack, a finish line right in the event village and no long road stretch at the end. Get your entries in soon, though – places are limited.
You can enter on-line at www.mtb-marathon.co.uk or send an SAE to: Kona 100 MTB Marathon Enduro Series, Attn: John Lloyd, Builth Wells Cycles, Smithfield Road, Builth Wells, Powys, LD2 3AN.
And don’t forget the final event in the series in Corwen on 20-21 September…
