Australian track rider, Anna Wilson has become the new womens hour record holder by riding almost 5km less than the previous holder.
The reason behind this curious track logic is the recent change to Hour record regulations by the luddite track members of the UCI. They have ruled that all records set on bikes with aerodynamic devices (disc wheels, tri-bars etc.) are now invalid – effectively writing off the last twenty years of hour efforts. In the womens event this meant the record has dropped from Longo’s 48.159 km to Wilson’s new mark of 43.501.
Mr Boardman, we’re waiting for your call….. |
British yellow jersey and Olympic gold medal holder, Chris Boardman will be trying to set a new “retro record” at the World Championships at the end of this month as a swan song to his superb track career but what do you think of technological restrictions?
We know a lot of you are still chewing around on old standard drive chainsets and are still in therapy for the loss of 8 speed and thumbshifters but this kind of pronouncement on mountain bike racing would take us right back to cyclo cross bikes, let alone rigid Stumpjumpers, just at a time suspension was making things interesting.
