Steve Peat may have been disappointed with his silver medal at the World Championships last week, but he managed to put that behind him on Saturday as he made his bid for the overall title in the World Cup Series.
Conditions at Let Gets, France, had been muddy earlier in the week, but by Saturday the course had dried out leaving things near-perfect.
Going into the final round both Peat and Austrian Chris Kovarik were in with a chance to take the title and in the early runs it looked like the competition was going to be fierce between them. But when it came down to the final Kovarik failed to shine with a time of 3:43, leaving Peaty the not-too-tall order of placing in the top 20 to take the series title. It wasn’t something Peat was about to fluff and he sealed the title emphatically by taking the top spot in the final round by half a second with a time of 3.38.03.
World Champion Nicolas Vouilloz, who foiled Peat last week, came in third and second place was an amazing performance by Fabien Barel, who managed to come in just half a second after Peat despite crashing half way down.
In the women’s title race Anne-Caroline Chausson won on the day and made it World Cup title number five just one week after her World Championship team. Chausson was over three and a half seconds in front of the second place finisher, Sabrina Jonnier. Despite her success though, she’ll now be looking for a new sponsor after the demise of team Volvo-Cannondale.
But British success in the downhill wasn’t just limited to the men’s race: Tracey Moseley’s fourth-place finish was enough to secure her position at third in the overall series and Fion Griffiths, bouyed up by her silver in the World Champs last week, again performed well coming in at 4.09.08 in third position on the day. A sterling performance from the lasses.
