A ‘park and ride’ scheme, claimed to be the first of its kind on
the planet, is being launched in Cambridge.
The £1 million plus project has been set up by the University
to help city centre-based staff overcome the serious congestion
problems in the city in an environmentally friendly and allows them
to park in a compound on the outskirts of the city before swapping to
a securely-stored bicycle for the final stages of their journey into
work.
The scheme has space for 300 cars and storage for some 400
bicycles – do the sums and it’s a slighly depressing acknowledgement
of the fact that so many cars have just one occupant.
In a saner world, this would be the logical use for the M25, now
the world’s biggest car park, it could just as easily be the world’s
biggest park and ride. Don’t hold your breath though.
