The International Olympic Committee is to replace two track cycling events with BMX racing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, presumably in a slightly belated effort to move with the times. It’s one of the quirks of the Olympic Games that the number of cycling (and indeed all) events is fixed, so if something comes in, something else has to go, and it’s the track that’s suffering this time.
It’s potentially a bad thing for British chances as we’re actually rather good on the track. On the other hand, top trackies like Jamie Staff came from BMX anyway, so we’ll probably just send all the same people and still do well…
There’s no news yet on which particular track events will get the chop, although there seem to be dozens of them so we’re not sure we’ll miss two.
