The British Olympic Association is pleased to announce that
the following road cyclists have been selected to represent Team GB at the forthcoming
Olympic Games in Sydney.

Simon Clegg, Team GB’s Chef de Mission for the Olympic Games, said: “I am delighted
to welcome these road cyclists into Team GB. There is an exciting blend of youth
and experience in this squad which includes a number of proven world-class performers.
I wish them well with their final preparations over the coming weeks”.
BACKGROUND INFO
Chris Boardman MBE : Born 6-8-68. Chris lives on the Wirral with his wife Sally
and their four children-Edward, Harriet, George and Oscar. He started cycling through
his parents Carol and Keith. At the 1992 Olympic Games he became the first British
cyclist to win gold for seventy two years when he pedalled his way to glory in the
4,000m Individual Pursuit. Twelve months on he broke the World One Hour record. A
year later he was a double World champion when he won the 4,000m Individual Pursuit
and Time Trial titles. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, he gained bronze in the Time
Trial. The same year he won his second 4,000m Individual Pursuit World title in a
world record time of 4min 11;114sec. He also regained the World One Hour record with
a distance of 56.375km. Chris has worn the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France on
three occasions. Sydney will be his third Olympic Games.
Jeremy Hunt : Born 12-3-74. Born Saskatchewan, Canada. When in Britain Jeremy lives
in Totnes, Devon, but spends most of the year in Toulouse, France. He was the 1997
National Road Race champion. The same year Hunt was a stage winner in the Tour of
Aragon. This year Hunt won a stage in the Tour of the Mediterranean out sprinting
the “Lion King” himself Italy’s Mario Cipollini arguably the best road
sprinter. Sydney will be his first Olympics.
David Millar : Born 4-1-1977. David was born in Malta. He lived in Forres, Scotland
for seven years but was brought up in Hong Kong. His mother lives in Maidenhead where
David stays when in Britain. At this year’s Tour de France he won the opening Time
Trial to wear the Yellow jersey to become only the fourth British rider to do so.
Max Sciandri : Born 15-1-1967. Max was born in Derby where he lived for one year.
He then lived in Bournemouth for six years before moving to Italy. He has relations
who live in Bournemouth. He is married with 2 children -Anastasia and Lorenzo. In
1992 he won the Kellogs Tour of Britain three years later he won a stage of the Tour
de France and the World Cup race in Leeds. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games he clinched
the bronze medal in the Road Race. Sydney will be his second Olympic Games.
John Tanner : Born 4-2-1968. John was born in Doncaster and now lives near Sheffield.
He has represented England at the Commonwealth Games. Tanner is a tough Yorkshire
man who has been the National Road champion for the last two years and finished in
the main field in Atlanta.
Ceris Gilfillan : Born 3-1-1980. Ceris was born in Rugby but now lives in Malvern.
She comes from a triathlon back ground and was a member of the British Triathlon
squad for three years before taking up cycling seriously. In 1997 Ceris was second
in the European Junior Duathlon Championship. The following year still as a junior,
she won the Senior National 10mile Time Trial championship. Last year she was placed
third in the Under 23 European Time Trial championships and has just gone one better
this year in Poland. She is the current National Road Race champion and took an excellent
fifth place overall among a world class field in the Hewlett Packard Laser Jet Eleven
Day Stage Race in the USA. Sydney will be her first Olympic Games.
Yvonne McGregor : Born 9-4-1961. Yvonne was born in Wibsey, Bradford, but has recently
moved to Alsager to be with the World Class Performance Road and Track Endurance
squads. She competed in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships before turning
to fell running where she finished eighth at the World Championships. Triathlon was
her next sport and she finished eighteenth in the European Long Course Championship.
She has a BA in Leisure and Recreation. In 1994 she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth
Games in the Points Race. Frightened to ride in the bunch she took off and lapped
the field. Four years later at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur she won bronze
in the 3,000m Individual Pursuit. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics she finished fourth
in the 3,000m Individual Pursuit and one year later she won a bronze medal for the
same discipline at the World Championships. She recently won the National 3000m Individual
Pursuit title for the eighth time. But perhaps her greatest achievement was when
she broke the World One hour record covering 47.411km, at Manchester in June 1995.
Sydney will be her second Olympic Games. Yvonne is a member of both the Track and
Road squads.
Sara Symington : Born 25-9-69. Sara was born in Maracaibo, Venezula, but now lives
in Aylestone, Leicestershire. Sara was a member of the National Triathlon squad and
competed in World Championships as an age grouper. The introduction of drafting encouraged
her to take up cycling. In 1998 she won the National Criterium Championship and represented
England at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. She is the only British woman
to have gained a podium position in a World Cup event when she finished third in
Round One in Canberra, Australia, last year. Sydney will be her first Olympic Games.
