Team GB has another medal at the Olympics. The track
boys fought a valiant effort, but despite their record breaking time in qualification,
walked away with only a bronze for their efforts.
The German team beat Ukraine to become Olympic champions, and set a world record
in the process, going under 4mins for the pursuit race at 3:59.71. They’d already
set a an Olympic record of 4:01.735 minutes to move through to the semifinals against
France on Tuesday night, breaking the record that Ukraine had set beating Britain,
which itself broke the record the the GB team produced to qualify. That beat the
previous record of 4:00.958 set by Italy in Manchester in August 1996.
The record-breaking ride by the German team (Guido Fulst, Robert Bartko, Daniel Becke
and Jens Lehmann) eliminated the Australian team despite the local foursome eclipsing
the previous best mark by an Australian team with their time of 4:03.209.
Both the German and Australian teams featured medal winning riders from the individual
pursuit, with Individual gold medallist, Bartko joining silver medallist, Lehmann
for their record breaking ride.
They’re going fast down there…
