How important is bike weight? That depends on who is asking the question and who is expected to deliver an answer; clearly it’s very important to those who race bikes, as this spectacular 6.52kg (14.37lb) Scott Scale proves.

A reader of Bikemagic sent over a link of a blog charting the build of this incredible bike. Our jaws hit the floor. Stunned, we scrolled through and immediately got an idea of the level of detail the person responsible for the bike has gone to. Every component weighed and measured, examined and documented on the blog.

How has he made it so light? It’s lighter than many top-end road bikes! They’ve started with a Scott Scale 26er carbon hardtail frame, so it’s off to a good start as it is one of the lightest frames in the world. It weighs just 899g, and uses a tube-to-tube carbon layup with one-piece carbon dropouts, carbon seat clamp and even disc mounts are made from the black stuff.

To that has been added a DT Swiss XRC100 fork with carbon crown and steerer tube. Wow it’s already sound like a great build and we’ve barely started. It gets better. Out back is bolted an ACROS hydraulic derailleur, no something we’ve seen or heard much of, but which is 170g lighter than an XTR rear mech. It uses CNC-machined aluminium and titanium parts.

A carbon fibre wheelset weighs 923g, and with tyres 1959g. THM carbon cranks with Carbon Ti chainring bolts and chainrings keeps the weight off the transmission. Magura M8 brakes with upgraded aluminium bolts throughout, and unusually the standard rotors have been kept “to keep the breaking performance”.

Finishing kit is a Swiss-made Parts of Passion carbon saddle atop a Schmolke TLO 350mm carbon post. The carbon stem weighs a scant 66.9g!
