NukeProof Neutron flat pedals – review

NukeProof Neutron flat pedals £54.99

I’ll admit right away, I am a died in the wool clipless pedal fan. But occasionally I have an itch to get the flat pedals out. This usually coincides with a bout of wet weather, when my local trails turn into an almighty slippery sloppy muddy nightmare – here flat pedals really come into their own, and I’m a fan.

I’ve been using Nukeproof’s Neutron pedals for a while now. They have a large and low-profile cancave shaped platform CNC-machined from aluminium that, along with ten lengthy pins on each side, provide super levels of grip.

The pins are adjustable if you want to tailor just how much they grip, and they’re replaceable should you smash a few off on the rocks. It would be nice to get a few spare pins provided in the box…

The chromoly axles spin on DU bushings and a pair of sealed cartridge bearings. So far during our test the pedals have continued to spin as smoothly as when they were removed from the bright yellow packaging in which they arrived. Graphics are laser etched and should last the length of time.

Their large platform provides serious levels of grip. Hooking up impressively with my shoes the pedals went a long way to converting me back to the benefits of riding flats. And not just in slippery conditions. While the pins do suck your shoes firmly onto the pedals, they do allow you to reposition your feet easily for setting yourself up into corners, or adjustments mid-corner.

With an aluminium body and chromoly axle they hit the scales at 438g, the heaviest in the three model Neutron range. The top version uses a magnesium body and titanium axle for an impressive weight of just 294g. These entry-level ones are a bit heavy then, but at £55 we’ll happily take the weight penalty and save the extra cash for other kit.

Verdict

Grippy platform and smooth running bearings and a decent price make the Nukeproof pedals a great flat pedal.
