Sarah Jones, known to many of us as a bike journalist and mtb enthusiast has been killed in a rafting accident in Peru. Just over a week ago, I got an email from a friend, telling me that Sarah had been lost overboard on a rafting trip, just a few days into her six month stay in South America. It came as the blow you’d expect, as many of the bike community had seen her last a BIKE2000, looking so excited about her trip abroad. We chatted, I half heartedly promised to get together when she got back, and said goodbye. On the 12th May, she fell overboard on a rafting trip, was knocked unconcious and was swept down river. I’ll miss her for lots of reasons. I remember the first time I met Sarah. Riding a Salsa round a crap cross country course somewhere in the Midlands, she gave me a copy of "Bad News" the fanzine that she’d written. It was full of bikes, sex and wierd stuff. Slowly she forged a path for herself in the wierd industry that is UK mountainbiking. Able to drink most us under the table, I’ve had the worse hangovers of my life following an evening in Sarah’s company. The picture we have of her (cheers Chipps) sums her up well. My only dissapointment is that I know Sarah will be annoyed, as she’s only got a half, not a full pint! We miss you Sarah. |
