Despite dropping out of the weekend’s Tour of Lombardy suffering from the cold that forced him to miss the World Road Race Championships Eric Zabel still had enough points to clinch victory in the season long World Cup points series.
Second place rider, and previous cup holder Andrei Tchmil had to win the Lomardy event to overtake Zabel, but he came in over 3 minutes down on the sprint finish duel between Raimondas Rumsas (first) and Francesco Casagrande (second).
Zabel has been at the top of the rankings since the Milan – San Remo race back in March, and after strong performances in the tour, his victory is a fitting result despite his obvious exhaustion towards the end of the season.
Full UCI results should appear here when the powers that be get round to it.
