Obviously being politicians they only ‘really’ mean it for as long as it suits them but MP Bernard Jenkin is at least a regular cyclist
The Tories pointed out that Labour has massively cut back on the cycling targets set by them in their last term and went through all the usual figures about how appalling our bike use figures are compared with places like Holland.
“The current government has done nothing to improve this. They have even got rid of targets we set to double cycling over this Parliament.” Mr Jenkin commented from his cycle clipped soapbox, finishing “Cycling initiatives are not about huge sums of money but about phasing cycling into every other decision made about transport.” Alongside all the usual well meaning words he did increase his cycle credibility significantly by proposing “Strict enforcement of penalties for motorists parked in cycle lanes” – now there’s a just cause for bringing back the noose if ever we heard one.
In the meantime there’s a new website showing all the current official council cycle routes now showing at the Cyclemaps website.
