We imagine that most readers of bike sites and forums are familiar with the ongoing saga of potentially hazardous quick release/disc brake combinations.
The latest development is that the CPSC, the US body in charge of consumer safety, are looking into it. This is a double-edged sword, really. On the upside, a serious and wide-ranging investigation will take a lot of guesswork and speculation out of the issue, clarifying how much of a problem actually exists. On the downside, the CPSC have been accused of being a tad heavy-handed in the past.
They’re looking for rider’s experiences of loosening skewers or wheel loss. Either wheel, any sort of brake, any sort of skewer. And if your experience of loosening skewers and wheel loss is nil, then tell them that too. It’s difficult to see how they can identify any potentially deficient parts from only half the story, after all. And we like to think that they’ll be carrying out lab testing too, of course.
Anyway, if you’d like to contact them, email [email protected]. And we’ll keep you posted.
