The trailbuilding scheme at Cwm Carn forest near Newport, South Wales (just over the border) has had a big injection of momentum thanks to the appointment of Russell Burton as project co-ordinator.
Previously employed trying to get the late great forum haunter Tony Wade to do some work at On Your Bike in London, he’s now headed west to (literally) get back to his mountain biking roots. As a registered singletrack addict, he’s ridden all over the world, and after meeting IMBA (www.imba.com) on their last visit he know wants to build more world class trails over here.
He told MBwales.com “Cwm Carn has the potential to be fantastic. The layout of the land is going to provide us with routes that are fun and challenging to ride. What will make it exceptional however, is the luck of the soil composition of the area, which means it will remain ride-able, in a good condition all year round. And did I mention the views?”
To get things moving fast enough to hit an April 2002 deadline he needs as much manpower as he can get – which is where you come in. Russ and his crew are happy to teach anyone the skills needed to build sustainable trails in any conditions if you’re happy to go and learn the trade on his hills. There might even be a couple of (badly) paid jobs for folk wanting to leave the rat race for a while or fill time before or after University.
