Trailing away in Oz

So what’s the longest mtb trail you can think of then?
There’s one in planning that could take a while to complete. The government of Western Australia has proposed to develop a mountain bike track that will start in the Perth foothills and extend about 850km to end in the southern city of Albany.

The idea behind the Munda Biddi Trail is to compliment the Bibbulmun Track and Pemberton’s Tree Top Walk and further establish nature-based tourism in the region.

Given that, it’s understandable that the trail should be aimed at recreational cyclists as well as experienced mtbers.

Launching the Trail on behalf of the tourism minister, local Roleystone MLA Martin Whitely said, “Touring cyclists who want to have a total ‘bush’ touring experience will be happy with the wide forest tracks and gentle slopes, which will make carrying panniers relatively easy, and the towns along the way enabling them to choose from a variety of meals and accommodation services…..Experienced and competitive cyclists will enjoy the more challenging sections and the easy access to a range of single-track circuits”

An 850k trail is quite some undertaking and will be completed in three stages, the earliest of which is planned to be finished next October and will extend between Mundaring and Collie. The government aims to complete the entire trail sometime in 2003.
