Ian Halliwell of Toro Loco Spain has sent us a load of stuff about his new company’s MTB holiday offerings in the ever-popular Sierra Nevada/Alpujarras region. The tagline is “XC to Xtreme”, which essentially means that you’ll experience some pretty hairy trails but you’ll have to earn most of them by climbing to the top. Which is, of course, As It Should Be.
Toro Loco certainly has a pretty posh gaff – Casa del Viento is a Spanish hillside farm sympathetically restored to provide four self-contained cottages clustered around a large main house. Each cottage sleeps between two and four and all have kitchen/lounge areas, separate bedrooms and bath or shower rooms. The grounds extend to four acres, with fruit trees, a 10x12m swimming pool, an array of terraced areas, secure bike shop and a workshop.
The riding in this part of Spain is well-known for bigness and gnarlitude, and Toro Loco can accommodate most riding preferences. The priority is fun, and they’ve clearly got the right idea when it comes to mid-ride refreshments – “cafe and bar stops are mandatory with us,” it says here.
All-inclusive (except for one evening meal when the chef has a night off) holidays are £250 for a week or you can opt for various lengths of weekend at £45 a day. Pick-up from nearby (50 minutes) Granada airport is included – there’s a small charge for transfers from the somewhat more distant Malaga, although Ian points out that there’s lots for non-riding family members to do in the area so you may want to hire a car.
As if all that lot isn’t enough, Toro Loco is doing a 10% discount for Bikemagic members. To qualify you need to book before the end of May, although you can actually take your holiday at any time. More details at www.torolocospain.com.
