In a move apparently designed to stun people into entering, the organisers of the Single Speed World Championships have already released some details of 2004’s event, planned for Saturday, 21st August.
We can’t yet tell you that much about the actual race, beyond the fact that the venue is Berlin somewhere. But it seems pretty clear from the press release that the organisers are keen to make a long and social weekend of it. Athough the race is taking pace on the 21st, you won’t be able to sign in and get your race number until one am that morning at the pre-race party in a punk rock club, idea being to “ensure the ‘turn up 15 minutes before, race, go home’ brigade are forced to socialise with the other people”. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether that’s a good or a bad thing…
Besides punk-rocking there are also plans for a bowling tournament on the Friday evening, a post-race party on the 21st, non-competitive rides, a road race and numerous bar crawls. And , as you’d hope from Germany, beer drinking features prominently in the proceedings. So if all this sounds like your Stein of tea you might want to sniff out a cheap flight to leave pennies for spending up the wall.
