Get out into the flood waters immediately – your life could depend on it!
New research confirms that while sudden vigorous activity increases the risk of a heart attack, regular strenuous activity strengthens the heart against such attacks considerably.
A report on 12 years of research from a team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston on 21,481 male physicians, found that the likelihood of keeling over while going for the burn averaged 1 in 1.5 million sessions. However the risk varied dramatically. “Men who engaged in vigorous exercise less than once a week were seven times more likely to die suddenly during or immediately after working up a sweat than someone who exercised at least five times a week.”
The study – published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine concludes “The benefits of a physically active lifestyle” in terms of warding off heart disease “clearly outweigh the small risks”.
So if you’re looking for an excuse to avoid the garden centre or the in-laws this weekend then assuring your longevity could be it. Though if you claim that “buying a Sweet Wings titanium chainset for only $1000 will increase your longevity and quality of life immeasurably” you’re forgetting the fatality statistics for domestic violence.
