Several news sources are reporting John Prescott’s plea for rail companies to cater for cyclists better. Old "two-jags" has been spotted riding a bike a couple of times, and earlier this week ordered train companies to instal bicycle racks on trains to encourage more cyclists to use the railways. The Strategic Rail Authority issued new rules to companies hoping to win lucrative 20- year contracts. Already, the SRA state that "The franchise agreements, which govern the provision of services, contain a provision that requires the operator to provide facilities for the carriage of bicycles on trains, so far as it is practicable for it to do so and subject to the availability of space on its rolling stock." Then adding…"The operator can charge for the facility but the charge may not be unreasonable." Whatever, inspite of the view that with more and more "bike rental" points on offer at stations being a clear indicator that the move was against bike transportation, it would seem as if the government might be pointing in a clear fresh direction. Here’s hoping. |
