While the BBC is notorious in some quarters for its apparent anti-bicycle bias (it got the right hump when the humble bicycle won Today‘s Favourite Inventions poll a while back), that’s not stopping it broadcasting Lawrence Pollard’s Pedalling to Freedom documentary series this week (19-23 April, 3.45-4pm). The five-part series examines the social history of the bicycle and its contribution to British society. Included are looks at influential novels like The Golf Lunatic and his Cycling Wife by Mrs Edward Kennard and H G Wells’s Wheels of Chance as well as the history of campaigning cycling groups like the Cyclists’ Touring Club and Clarion Cycle Club.
