He might be 35, but Barrie Clarke still started his 2002 mountain bikes season perfectly by bagging a close-fought victory on the Thetford course.
Clarke ( Helly Hansen / Giant), fellow seasoned racer Nick Craig (Pertex / ABG) and Phil Dixon set a searing pace for the first lap before being joined by Liam Killeen (Fisher). This quartet worked together to increase their lead throughout the race but Clarke grabbed the decisive holeshot off the final fireroad section, defending his slim lead through the last bit of singletrack and over the line, with Killeen in second, Craig third and Dixon fourth.

With Caroline Alexander still training in America, Sue Thomas dominated the women’s event for a clear win ahead of Isla Rowntree. Full results for the rest of the races will go live on the British Cycling website later today.
