A Zambian man was yesterday sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a bicycle with an assault rifle. Today’s Independent reported that the man denied the charges.
With few decent roads and widespread poverty, bicycles in Zambia carry great social prestige and practical value, indeed they are taxed in much the same way that our cars are. Armed robbery in Zambia carrys a mandatory death sentence. Passing sentence Judge Phiri said
“My hands are tied by the law”.
