Ukranian national champion Serhiy Honchar has now added the Time Trial World champion’s jersey to his wardrobe, with a blistering final furlong taking him to a 10 second victory.
German rider, Michael Rich was feeling confident after being ahead at every checkpoint with a 4 second margin at the final 5km. However Honchar churned his massive gear up the last few climbs and the finishing straight to come in 10.19 ahead of the 1992 Olympic Gold medallist.
Weather was changeable throughout the event with hailstorms, blustery wind and a downpour half way through Honchar’s winning ride, making conditions extremely difficult, but as he commented after the race “The weather conditions were perfect – well I won didn’t I?”
Suprise 3rd place was taken by Hungarian first year pro Laszlo Bodrogi, who looked undestandably delighted, with Britain’s Chris Boardman just missing the podium in 4th, 1min 16.32 behind Honchar.
Abraham Olano rode last as defending champion, but never looked a serious threat, eventually rolling in 5th.
Incidentally if you’re planning to watch the Worlds road race on Sunday, rather than heading off for a soggy club run, then you’d better get the dog walked early in time for the 9.30am start on Eurosport.
