Hector Leonardo Paez claimed cross-country gold for Columbia at the Pan American Games in Tapalpa, Mexico.
The 26-year-old Paez clocked 1:31:12 hours to finish 17 seconds ahead of Canada’s Max Plaxton, while Jeremiah Bishop of the United States completed the podium.
Paez, riding a Bianchi Methanol SL, had already qualified for London 2012 by virtue of winning the previous edition of the Pan American Games in 2007.
Meanwhile, Heather Irmiger of the United States won the women’s race in 1:34:09 hours, with Mexico’s Laura Lorenza Morfin taking silver and Canada’s Amanda Mae-Ling Sin bronze.
