All last week we gave you the chance to win one of five Knog Boomer Wearable LED lights, just by sharing your funniest/oddest night riding tales.

We had loads of good entries, so picking just five was understandably a difficult task. After much umming and arring, we settled on the five below.

Steve Smith won with this tale involving a baby badger:

“Riding down a steep road leading off Salisbury Plain last winter and a baby badger runs out in front of me. As I swerved to avoid it, my pedal hit the verge and I launched over the handle bars with the bike following me as I was clipped in. The badger trotted off down the road whilst I nursed a very sore wrist and picked up the pieces of my light…”

Mike Walkden gave us this one:

“Solo riding through Eagle Park in Mount Lofty (Adelaide, South Australia) and on a straight bit of single-track saw a guy stood starring at me. I paused and slowed and as my light lit the subject realised my ‘guy’ was actually a Roo. Not sure who was more scared – although his decent was considerably quicker than mine.”

Jamie Gray with:

“I was out on a nightride with two friends one had a headtorch that wasn’t really up to the job. We got to the point of the ride where he was going one way and me and my other friend were going in the opposite direction. Being a nice guy I gave him my light so he could get home safely, I felt confident I had enough local trail knowledge and could follow my other friends light to get home.

“At first the forest roads were ok in the moon light but as I got onto the singletrack in the trees I started losing visibility. I spent the next half an hour body totally tense trying to use all my senses to judge where the trail went, it didn’t go exactly to plan, I hit trees at full speed having no idea they were there and supermaned into a good few ditches. Now that’s what I call being a good friend.  :)”

Ants Cossar told us this slightly scary story:

“Descending the Pennines headings towards Halifax area, 8 mile long road descent, unlit roads – bar my crappy low-watt front light, and the sparks coming off my mates bike where his (worn down to the metal) rear brake pad holders trying to get some grip on his rear wheel at 40 mph…. scary but fun!”

Royston Smith gave us this gem:

“Ten o’clock at night, emerging from dark woods onto an unlit gravel track, I started hearing a mysterious squeaking noise which got louder as I carried on. What was it? The grim reaper sharpening his scythe or a giant deranged bat?

“The answer soon became clear as an old car came into the beam of my lights. Inside I could just about make out a couple of semi-clad people “at it” in the car, causing it to rock on its noisy suspension.

“They were a bit surprised to be suddenly lit up by 500 lumens of LED power however. In fact they seemed to think they’d been busted by the police or something and started frantically trying to get clothes on. As I cycled by though they realised I was just a “mad cyclist” and stopped panicking. I carried on my way and they resumed their business.

“Unfortunately under the circumstances we didn’t speak so I couldn’t tell them I was near my turning round point and would be back in ten minutes. They did seemed a little less surprised to see me the second time and didn’t stop to check.”
