End of an era

Today the last Nottingham-built frame rolls off the
Raleigh production line. Tomorrow the plant is split into lots and auctioned off.
Wheelbuilding machines, overhead cranes, laser cutting robots and Tig welding equipment
is all up for grabs

Raleigh have been making bikes in Nottingham since 1895. This is the world’s best
known bicycle factory being packaged in lots, never to be seen in one place again.
Some of the robot laser cutting kit is relatively new. Somebody somewhere is going
to get the bargain of the century. No doubt some of the equipment will end up in
the workhops of Britain’s craft framebuilders and CNC trick-bit makers, but much
of it will be bought by faceless engineering companies outside of the trade.

Raleigh have good reasons for closing the factory down but, surely, there won’t be
a dry eye in the house on 10th December? This will be history. Scattered.
