What does this look like to you? A bit of rock and some trees? Or can you see something more? Do you have an uncanny line-visualising sixth sense giving you an impression of a spanky stretch of singletrack making some imaginative and exciting use of the rocky bit?
If so, the trailbuilders of Dalbeattie in Scotland would like to hear from you. Dalbeattie is one of the forests being developed for riding in the Seven Stanes project. The Scots builders have already got a bit of a rep for leading their trails over reasonably adventurous lines from their work at Glentress, and the guys working at Dalbeattie are keen to create a “trail finish to remember”. And anyone who reckons purpose-built trails are too tame will be heartened by talk of a “technical rockfest treat”…
The not-yet-finished Dalbeattie trail already includes a number of technical rocky sections, and when the trailbuilding team stumbled across the outcrop in the picture they reckoned it was an opportunity too good to miss.
“When we came across this new rock formation near the end of the trail we thought it would be a great finish to the route and something volunteers could have fun creating,” said project leader Karl Bartlett.
Want to get involved? A trailbuilding session is being organised on Saturday 15 February starting at 10am. Volunteers should meet at the cyclists’ car park (a quarter of a mile past the main forest entrance on your left) before moving into the forest to shift vegetation,
create some rock steps and then ride out to the outcrop at about 2pm.
“Some of the preparatory work will have been done so that volunteers can get stuck into creating rock features,” says Karl. ” It will most likely be a case of getting there and then deciding how adventurous and difficult we want to be with the last section. In total I think it will run to about 300 metres so we won’t finish it first time around and another building session will be planned.”
