Former National Champion Nick Craig is to part company with sponsors On-One and Planet-X. In typical On-One style, the official press release is worth repeating in full:
“On-One and sister company Planet-X today announced that it would not be renewing its sponsorship of Olympic rider and former National Champion Nick Craig.” “Despite Craig having a hugely succesful season, including a fabulous victory at the Kona 100 and 23rd in the World Champs, On-One boss Brant Richards said that he has been forced to re-evaluate his commitment to sponsoring Mr Craig because On-One did not wish to sponsor a rider with ginger hair and because Craig failed to send in enough soup recipes that were to be featured in his weekly column on the On-One website.” “In the words of Richards, ‘Failure to supply us with the necessary recipes was a serious breach of Nick’s contractual obligations and our realistaion that Nick was a ginger has left us with no alternative but to terminate our relationship forthwith.'” “Craig ,who was said to be devastated by the developments, was unavailable for comment.”We’d hazard a guess that those aren’t the real reasons for Craig’s departure. And indeed the grapevine bears a complex tale of World Cup points, Olympic eligibility and UK team funding. Meanwhile, a little bird tells us that Trek are in the frame as Craig’s new home, and the shoeshine guy on the corner of 8th and Broadway says that he’ll be racing World Cups in 2003, something that wasn’t in On-One/Planet X’s plans.
